There and Back Again….plus, Through the Looking Glass….

OK, let’s get the medical report out of the way first.  Woke up at 6am this morning, with my dog cuddled up against me, as usual.  Headed to the hospital, filled with dread—true steely-eyed, teeth-clenched dread.  Woke up again at 8am, wondering where the heck my dog was, and then where the heck my bedroom was.  Of course, they don’t allow dogs in the endoscopy recovery area….

When your friends tell you that colonoscopies these days are no big deal, believe them.  I never even knew it happened….which is how everyone told me it would be.  I was also minus three benign polyps, which, had they not been removed, might have grown to require real surgery, or even turned malignant.  I have two musician friends who died of colo-rectal cancer in their mid-fifties (rock muscians can be very bad about taking care of basic health issues), probably preventable through early screening.  So….floss, use sunscreen, and get your colonoscopy once you turn 50-52.  In some ways, I preferred the colonoscopy to sunblock.

Sorry if that was TMI….let’s move on to the subject of the truly malignant polyps currently inhabiting the colon of our body politic….yes, the congressional Democrat leadership, and the Obamakins.  Watching Nancy Pelosi attempt to lie her way out of (apparently under heavy meds, although Rush said today that it’s just Botox withdrawal) her disgraceful attempt to politicize a national security issue was truly surreal.  I know I’m not the only person using that adjective, but that’s the only one that really comes to mind.  And she is second in the line of succession to the POTUS.  Think about that.  Think about that deranged little ferret occupying the Oval Office.  Of course, we have a line of defense….the deranged wombat Joe Biden is first in line, so that’s some measure of relief.  And the MSM was supposedly worried about Sarah Palin’s readiness to step up to the job.  What sad farce.

Speaking of Sarah….I’ve always been a big admirer of Victor David Hanson, classics professor, Renaissance man, articulate curmudgeon, NRO contributor.  But I don’t recall ever seeing him delve into parody before, and this one was pretty damn good.  Those on our side of the fence get tired of pointing out the obvious media bias, and it really has gotten to the point of being so ridiculous that it is parody as real life.  Anyway, check out Professor Hanson’s take on Sarah Palin’s first 100 days as president, and the predictable MSM reaction….so hilarious that it will make you cry to the heavens:  “Why, God, Why?”

Speaking of excellent parody, check out Iowahawk’s latest, but not if you’d be offended by  listening to unbleeped Rahm Emmanuel.  One of his best, and only as profane as was necessary to accurately reflect the juvenile humor on display at the recent White House Correspondents’ dinner.  Or “roast.”  Or whatever it was supposed to be that the Boy President and friends found so hilarious.

In more Through the Looking Glass stuff, I thought I was just woozy from my “prep” when I read that Obama is now warning that our projected debt and spending are “unsustainable.”  You can’t make this stuff up, as they say, but you have to wonder just how stupid he thinks we are, or just how uninformed are our genius fellow-citizens who scrupulously study the NYT, and then decide, “yeah, I’m voting for Obama.”

It was always a ridiculous proposition.  It has never made a lick of sense.  It’s like 55% of the voting public went in for a colonoscopy on November 4, 2008, said “drug me up so I don’t feel anything,” and assumed that everything would be OK when they woke up.  Of course, now Dr. Obama parades a malignant, talking polyp wearing glasses and a smug grin—that would be Press Secretary Robert Gibbs—as supposed evidence that he’s now in control and the procedure was a complete success.  Oh, and Biden.  And Pelosi.   And Reid.  And Barney Frank.  Polyps, all.

Maybe we could get the NYT medical editors to write a piece about them.

Legal Insurrection has a nice summation of the Obama/Pelosi “Through the Looking Glass” domestic policy approach: If you repeat a lie often enough, perhaps it will become the truth for some. Just make it up, baby, and as long as the press gives you a pass, you’re gold.

Hanson’s article was hilarious, and sad but true. (Did you know he also teaches classes each fall at Hillsdale. :) )

I did not know that! How cool! Definitely seems the place to be as a classicist, these days.

FYI–there is also Hillsdale-sponsored cruise from Venice to Athens this summer, and Hanson is one of the guest speakers, along with Paul Johnson and Walter Williams: http://www.hillsdale.edu/seminars/offcampus/cruises/upcoming.asp

I would love to go if I didn’t already have such a busy summer in the works.
