In a word, “No.” A few blogs that I frequent—written by individuals whom I consider to be fellow-travelers in the Resistance—seem, IMO, to have missed a subtle aspect of ONN’s recent spoof-within-a-spoof.

At Big Hollywood, Michael Wilson’s even-handed post points out that Glenn Beck lives under daily death threats, such that he needs to have a private security force to protect him and his family. This is not funny, agreed. What is funny (or at least grimly ironic) is that these death threats come from a sector of the population that considers itself to be “Progressive.”

The same people who mouth platitudes about freedom of speech, but want to shut down talk radio and “regulate” the internet. The same people who sport T-shirts featuring the image of mass-murderer Che Guevara while protesting the “waterboarding” of a few terrorists. The same people who sport CCCP (USSR) logos, and consider Mao to be a great political philosopher["Political power grows from the barrel of a gun"], but want to ban the private ownership of guns, so that only the minions of murderous dictatorships will have the ability to defend themselves. Can humor be found in the juxtaposition of murder/murderers with “Progressive” delusions? Well, yes.

In the Onion News Network video (see below), I think the subtle fact that it is a spoof-within-a-spoof is being missed….but I think that it is easy to miss the subtlety if one is not a regular viewer of ONN. Just as it is very easy to miss Rush’s subtle ironies if one is not “up to speed,” as he puts it; Rush claims that it takes 6 weeks of regular listening to truly “get” his show. Perhaps it is the same for ONN. In any event, I watch and listen to Beck regularly, and I thought this parody was right on the mark. It skewers the hypocritical, hate-filled Left for its whipped-up anti-Beck hysteria, but does so in the context (as always) of ridiculing the MSM that reports such stuff (or drives it) with slack-jawed ignorance (or malevolence).

For the record: I also don’t think that ONN was really wishing for a fatal collapse of the Staples Center in order to end a one-sided Clippers loss…
